It's not unusual for the Stony Brook Seawolves to face the Wildcats on the basketball court.  They do so at least twice every season when they face conference opponents...the New Hampshire Wildcats.  But the opening round of the NCAA Tournament is a little different as these Wildcats are from Kentucky.

The Seawolves are seeded 13th in the East Regional and meet fourth seed Kentucky on Thursday night in Des Moines, Iowa.  Stony Brook defeated Vermont 80-74 to receive the automatic NCAA bid.  Kentucky went to overtime as the Wildcats topped Texas A & M to win the Southeastern Conference.

This is the first NCAA appearance for Stony Brook. The Seawolves are 26-6 while Kentucky is 26-8.  The Wildcats have a storied Tournament history having won eight National Championships.

When the pairing was announced many searched the record books to see if these two schools had ever played against each other before in men's basketball.  The answer is.....yes.  In 2007 Kentucky defeated Stony Brook 62-52 in a non-conference contest. There will be a nationwide television audience this time around to see if the newcomer to the tournament can defeat the giant.
