There is an early set-up for a possible Republican Primary for Broome County Sheriff but only one officially announced candidate at this time.

They say you never forget your first love and with long-time Sheriff David Harder’s pending retirement, New York State Senator and former Broome Undersheriff Fred Akshar says he’s ready to go back to his: law enforcement.

The Binghamton Republican May 3 announced he is running for Broome County Sheriff in 2022

Meanwhile Broome County Sheriff Captain Kathleen Newcomb this week told local media she has been seriously considering seeking the Republican nomination for Sheriff in 2022.  She says she is currently discussing the decision with her family and expects to announce her intentions in the near future.

 Newcomb has served many years in the Sheriff’s office, moving through the ranks to become the highest-ranking female officer ever in the department.  She currently is the officer who releases news information to local media.

In an interesting parallel path for the two possible contenders for the Sheriff’s job, at one time Newcomb and now-Senator Akshar had been in a relationship.

Current Sheriff David Harder started as a Deputy in 1964 and has been Sheriff since 1998.  He is also a Republican.
