Scams seem to be riding a never-ending train these days. If it's too good to be true,  or something doesn't sound right, whether it's by mail, email, phone, or text, it's most likely a scam.

The latest area scam announced by the Broome County Sheriff's Office is that persons are once again impersonating detectives and deputies and contacting Broome County residents to solicit money and gift cards.

As a reminder, never provide credit card or other payment information over the phone to anyone claiming to be law enforcement. If they ask, you know it is not legit.

Don’t be fooled, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office will never ask for credit card information or any form of payment over the phone. If you believe you’ve received a scam phone call, please contact the Sheriff’s Office so a report can be filed. - Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar
Just recently, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office reported that they have received several reports from residents who received phone calls from individuals pretending to be BCSO detectives or deputies.
The callers are informing persons who answer the call that they had missed their court appearances and are threatened with warrants for arrest or thousands of dollars in fines.
As has happened in the past, in the course of the conversation, the scammers tell the victim they are on a recorded line, and advise them not to tell anyone about the call.
If the person stays on the line, the scammer will next request payment via credit card information or by other means. The Broome County Sheriff's Office urges anyone who receives one of these calls to hang up.
Never share any credit card information over the phone, no matter what the scammer says. If you or someone you know receives one of these scam calls, contact the Broome County Sheriff’s Office at 607-778-1911.
