Driver Flees After Pursued Car Slams Into Pole on Riverside Drive
A vehicle which had been sought by police on Route 17 crashed into a utility pole on Riverside Drive in Johnson City.
The 2006 Volvo sedan apparently was traveling east when the driver lost control of the vehicle around 5:15 p.m. Monday.
The car smashed into the pole at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Ackley Avenue. Electric lines fell down across Ackley Avenue but they did not interfere with heavy rush-hour traffic on Riverside Drive.
The man who had been driving jumped from the wrecked vehicle and ran from the scene.
The passenger side of the car sustained heavy damage from the impact with the pole.
Police called for a canine unit to track the driver who residents spotted running through backyards. He was found by officers on Binghamton's West Side several blocks from where the crash occurred.
No information was immediately available on why police had been seeking the man or what charges he would face.
A NYSEG crew was at the scene to deal with the damaged pole and the downed power lines. There were no reports of electric service problems related to the crash.
