Even On Sunday! Johnson City Chick-fil-A Construction
The long-awaited Chick-fil-A restaurant in Johnson City may not operate on Sundays but the workers building it are working Sundays.
Construction activity at the site at the Oakdale Commons began in early May. Crews have been busy erecting the building on the southeast corner of the property at Harry L. Drive and Reynolds Road.
Workers are putting in plenty of long hours, even during some extremely hot weather conditions. They've been spotted working on Friday evenings and even on weekends, including on Sundays.
Some people who have driven past the construction site have said they find all the activity on Sunday to be ironic. The chain's restaurants are known for operating only six days a week.
Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy made the decision to close on Sundays eight decades ago. According to the company, Cathy "knew what it was like to work seven days a week in restaurants, so he saw the importance of letting his employees set aside one day to rest and worship if they choose."
That corporate policy remains in effect today, although it does not apply to contractors building Chick-fil-A restaurants.
The Johnson City Chick-fil-A location is expected to open in October.
Broome County's second Chick-fil-A restaurant is to be built in the Town Square Mall in Vestal. It will be constructed on the site of the old Storming Crabb restaurant, which closed in 2022.
The vacant building has yet to be demolished. The new Vestal restaurant is expected to open next January.
