Endwell Now Has Its Own “Square Deal Arch”
More than a century after Endicott Johnson Shoe Company workers erected large arches over Main Street in Endicott and Johnson City, Endwell now has an arch of its own.
The newest "arch" is in the form of an electronic message display recently installed in front of the Union town hall on East Main Street.
It may not be as big as the arches built in the town's two villages in 1920 but it is designed to honor the region's heritage.

Town supervisor Rob Mack said a grant from Broome County covered some of the cost of the new informational sign.
He told WNBF News a monument was built around the modern digital display that is "an exact replica of the two arches" located a short distance to the east and west.

The stones and steel that were part of the large historic arch at the Johnson City-Binghamton line were removed two years ago as part of a restoration project.
The job became more complicated than expected after workers discovered the arch's condition was worse than anticipated.

Some work is being done now to the concrete bases that remain in place on Main Street.
Johnson City officials are hoping the arch will be reassembled at the site this fall.
Endicott's arch on East Main Street currently appears to be in good condition.
In 1995, a Department of Transportation project widened that arch by 14 feet to improve traffic flow along what is part of state Route 17C.
