Broome Sheriff’s Office Collects and Destroys Unused Prescriptions

Broome County reports destruction of over 1,140 pounds of prescription pills turned in for disposal.

Pre-pandemic, drug drop-off events had been periodically scheduled through the year and at several locations.

Drop boxes have also been available for people to get rid of drugs and reduce the chance of them falling into the wrong hands or polluting the environment at several locations.  Some lobby locations, however, may still be off-limits due to closings due to the pandemic.

The Broome Sheriff’s Office, however, is still collecting unwanted, unused and expired prescription pills continuously at a lobby drop box at the public safety building on Lieutenant VanWinkle Drive in the Town of Dickinson weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Sheriff’s office on average sends around 3,000 pounds of pills each year to be incinerated, keeping controlled substances off the street and out of the hands of people with substance use disorders.
