Drug addicts can now get a free ride to treatment programs courtesy of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

County officials have announced final mechanisms have been approved and fallen into place for The “Sheriff Assisted Recovery Initiative” that will immediately get help at local facilities for residents suffering from substance abuse.

Those people can go to the Sheriff’s Office or call 778-1911, extension 1 for transport to the Addiction Crisis Center or United Health Services' Binghamton General Hospital.

Volunteers have also been trained to accompany or wait with the addict looking to recover.

The program is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The “Sheriff Assisted Recovery Initiative” is separate from the “Safe Program”, which is run through the Broome County District Attorney’s Office.
