Wilson Medical Center Work Taking Longer than Expected

A major demolition and modernization project at the Wilson Medical Center campus in Johnson City won't be completed this fall.

United Health Services officials had expected the work at the site of the old Picciano Building could be finished before winter. They now anticipate the project will be done early next year.

Construction crews spent much of last winter making preparations for the demolition of 75 percent of the structure that was closed in May 2016 because of structural concerns.

The 40-year-old building was adjacent to the UHS parking deck that collapsed the previous summer. The site is located across Baldwin Street from the main hospital complex.

Demolition work at the Picciano site, which started a few months ago, has been completed. A UHS spokesman said some "little tweaks" have been made in the project plans, causing the work to take longer than expected.

Interior renovation work is planned for the portion of the Picciano Building that remains.

UHS is seeking approval from the Johnson City Zoning Board of Appeals for a directional sign for parking. The wall sign would be larger than is permitted under existing rules for the site.

A public hearing on the request for a zoning variance will be held at the village offices at 243 Main Street on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
