Residents in the Vestal School District are getting a new tax following voting April 5.

A proposal to form a special taxing district to support the public library has been approved 1,055 to 189.

Five trustees to oversee library financial operations were also elected.

Eroding financial support from the Town and Broome County had library officials warning of cuts and even possible closure.

The new taxing district will mean a levy of $33.51 per $100,000 of assessed property value and would replace the taxes from the Town that had been directed to the library.

The levy for the Town of Owego would be $33.50 and for the residents of the Town Binghamton, the levy is put at $33.13.

The new library tax district levy is being collected by the Vestal School District but does not go to the schools.
