A middle school in Endicott was locked down today after some type of "suspicious activity" outside the building.

According to the Union-Endicott School District, Jennie F. Snapp Middle School on Loder Avenue was placed in a "lockout" at 11:15 a.m.

Endicott police sent several officers to the school after the department was notified at 11:21.

Authorities say about 12 village police officers, detectives and state troopers searched the area for a man who was deemed to be suspicious.

After checking the building and the neighborhood around the school for about an hour, students were allowed to leave classroom where they had been confined.

Police left the school shortly after 12:30 p.m.

School district and police officials said no more information would be released about the incident.

Police say no similar episodes had been reported recently at the school.
