Endicott Speedway Store Closes, Gas Tanks Removed

After the recent closing of a neighborhood convenience store, some Endicott residents are wondering what will happen to the site.

The Speedway location at 503 East Main Street has been shut down and all signage has been removed from the building.

People who work near the store say it closed at the end of August. Some customers said they were told by employees that they were offered jobs at other nearby Speedway locations.

The fuel tanks at the store were yanked out of the ground last week and hauled away from the property.

A few former patrons of the business said they had been told that the store was being shut down because of leaking fuel tanks which would require costly repairs.

Workers at other Speedway locations declined to comment on why the Endicott store was closed.

Speedway stores now are owned by 7-Eleven, which has announced plans to close several hundred locations across the country this year. There was no immediate response to a request for comment from 7-Eleven.

There's been a convenience store at the East Main Street location for decades. A Red Red Barrel store operated there in the 1990s. It then became a Hess Express store.

Speedway acquired the location from Hess in June 2014. Sixteen other Speedway stores continue to operate in Broome and Tioga counties.
