Experts say many people who get hooked on opioids find their fix in expired prescription drugs or medications found at friends’ and relatives’ homes. A nation-wide “take-back” effort to get unwanted medications out of reach takes place April 30.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson City Police Department, Afton Town Hall, Otselic Fire Department, Vestal Fire Station #4 and Windsor Community House are just a few of the locations accepting drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The unwanted, outdated or unused prescription and over-the-counter medications are being accepted anonymously and can include anything from aspirin to controlled substances but syringes or sharps of any kind can not be collected.

Some other locations in Broome County participating in the collection are at the Johnson City Elks Club on Watson Boulevard and Scoops Ice Cream on Route 11 in Whitney Point.  The Sheriff’s office also has a collection bin at the public safety facility in the Town of Dickinson available during regular business hours.
