Dozens of citizens and representatives of labor unions and other groups say they aren’t happy with talk that the City of Binghamton may be looking at turning over part of the operations of the Binghamton/Johnson City Joint Sewage Treatment Plant to a private contractor.

A rally was held outside of City Hall August 7 as lawmakers were to talk about the expensive plant operations at a business work session.

Citizen groups, labor representatives and even the lawmakers themselves are questioning what privatization of sewer plant operations will do to the behind-schedule multi-million-dollar repairs and renovations and sewer rates once a for-profit factor is added in.

The matter is expected to come before lawmakers again in September.
