Town of Binghamton Residents Brace for Higher Water, Sewer Bills

Several hundred residents of the town of Binghamton are about to receive water and sewer bills that will reflect new rate increases.

The town has issued an alert about the bills that are about to be sent out.

Town supervisor Elizabeth Rounds estimates there are about 900 water and sewer customers who will be receiving the bills in the days ahead.

The bills will show a 36 percent increase in sewer charges and a 25 percent increase in water charges.

The town board approved the changes following the dramatic hike in rates charged by the Binghamton-Johnson City Joint Sewage Treatment Plant.

Rates for users of the Vestal facility were increased following a massive construction project.

Residents of several Broome County communities that use the sewage treatment plant also are being hit with big rate hikes.
