The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Boys Basketball Championships got underway Friday at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Six games were played including the opening contest in the tournament which featured undefeated Olean versus once beaten Glens Falls in a Class B semifinal.  In that one Joe Girard III who has scored over 4,000 points in his career led his team to an 83 63 victory.  Girard III had a game-high 39 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to key the win.  He is headed to Syracuse following his high school graduation for play for the Orange.

In the second Class B semifinal Lowville defeated Center Moriches  80-68.  Lowville moves on to the championship round and will face Glens Falls at 5:15 P.M. for the state B title.

In other semifinal contests:

In Class A Mendon downed Troy 92-67.  In the other Class A semifinal the Poughkeepsie Pioneers topped Manhasset 74-63.  Poughkeepsie meets Mendon at 7:00 P.M. for the Class A title.

In Class AA West Genesee defeated Niagara Falls 59-57.  In the other semifinal Brentwood advances with a 74-63 victory over Kingston.  Genesee meets Brentwood for the AA title at 9:00 P.M.

The Class C and Class D semifinals begin the competition Saturday with Middle Early College facing Lake George in a Class C semifinal at 9:00 A.M.  All games are played at the Floyd L.Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
