Glens Falls and Joe Girard III Open State Tournament With a Victory
The opening game of the New York State Public High School Association Boys Basketball Championship drew a large crowd and offered plenty of excitement as the Glens Falls Indians defeated the Olean Huskies 83-63 at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. The win ups Glens Falls record to 24-1 while the loss is the first of the season for Olean. Glens Falls advances to the state championship game tomorrow at 5:15 P.M. to face Lowville who defeated Center Moriches 80-68.
Lots of attention was focused on Glens Fall standout Joe Girard III. He was named Mr. New York Basketball earlier in the week and scored over 4000 points in his high school career. In his team's win this morning he led all scorers with 39 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and added nine assists. He came in averaging just under 50 points per game. He has accepted an athletic scholarship to play basketball at Syracuse University next season.
The tournament continues through Sunday afternoon. Marathon in Class D competition is the only school still alive from Section 4.
