Construction has started on a facility in the town of Union that will prepare spiedie meat for distribution to retailers and other individual customers.

Sam A. Lupo & Sons is building the new processing plant on Dickson Street in West Endicott, about a mile east of its current operation on Campville Road.

The future facility is located at the site of the former Kalurah Shrine Center. The spiedie producer acquired the property in May 2019.

Company president Sam Lupo Jr. has said a 9,000-square-foot addition will be built to the north of the existing building. The new facility will have about 20,000-square-feet of production space.

Lupo said the project is going a "little bit slower" than he had hoped but he's pleased that construction is moving forward.
