West Endicott Carousel Could Open for Fall Rides

In a year of bad news for Broome County's historic carousels, there now is some good news.

The 97-year-old carousel at the West Endicott Park did not operate during the summer because of serious mechanical issues.

Robert Mack, the town of Union supervisor, said the Connecticut-based experts who were hired to address the issues have indicated the merry-go-round can be reassembled soon.

Mack told WNBF News that "there were a couple of problems that they were able to fix." He said they've advised town officials "that the carousel is coming back" around the end of September.

He said "they're going to put it back together." It's possible it could be open "for a weekend or two in October."

Mack said while "it's in pretty good shape, there are some parts that need to be made" in order for repair work to be completed.

He said the carousel technicians plan to use some temporary "straight rods" to allow the carousel to be used this fall. He said some of the horses won't go up and down until permanent "curved rods" are fabricated and installed next year.

Only two of the Binghamton area's six carousels were operational over the summer months.
