Authorities say 27-year-old Darrien Howard of Syracuse has been charged with second-degree murder. He also faces a weapon possession count.

Endicott police chief Patrick Garey said Howard was taken into custody in the village Thursday evening.

Garey said Syracuse police requested assistance from his agency after investigators determined Howard was in Endicott.

A Syracuse police department spokesman said Howard was taken into custody at 300 West Main Street.

Howard was sought in connection with the death of his mother, 54-year-old Valerie Crowder. Her body was found in her Syracuse residence Thursday morning.

According to syracuse.com, Howard was arraigned in Syracuse Friday morning. Court papers indicated Crowder had been stabbed several times.

Garey, the Endicott police chief, said he was unfamiliar with Howard. He said he did not know why he wound up in the village. Garey said it seemed he just "randomly picked us."
