Man Shot After Pulling Gun on Vestal Police Officer on Route 17

Authorities say a Vestal police officer shot a man who pulled a gun on him as he checked on a stopped vehicle on Route 17.

According to a Vestal police department news release, officers were sent to the highway around 9:45 p.m. to check out a disabled vehicle.

The first officer to arrive discovered a two-door sedan stopped in the westbound passing lane of Route 17 near Castle Gardens.

The officer briefly spoke with the driver. Police say the vehicle occupant then pulled a handgun from his side without warning. The officer fired at the man, moved to a safe position and called for backup.

The vehicle driver closed the door and did not respond to police. Negotiators spent nearly three hours trying to get the man to leave the vehicle. He ultimately was taken into custody around 12:45 a.m. Thursday. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. His condition was not released.

Police say no one else was injured in the incident. The names of the officer and the wounded man have not been released.

No charges have been filed yet against the 29-year-old man.

Route 17 and the Vestal Parkway in the Castle Gardens area were closed for several hours because of the standoff.
