Police Working to ID Binghamton Graffiti Spree Suspect
Binghamton detectives are continuing to investigate a wave of spray-painted graffiti on public and private property downtown and on the city's West Side.
City police Thursday afternoon released a surveillance photo of a man who is a possible suspect in the vandalism.
Investigators described him as a "white male riding a blue bicycle and wearing a white mask."
According to a news release, the man is suspected of spray painting over Israeli flags and on the fence of a residence on Brevity Court on the West Side. The fence faces Riverside Drive.
The same man is believed to have scrawled "Pray 4 Gaza" at several spots downtown, including on a wall at the city-owned parking garage on Washington Street and the Merrill Lynch building at 2 Court Street.
Similar graffiti was reported at Binghamton High School on Main Street, the Centre Plaza building on Henry Street and on a wall at the former Old World Deli on Water Street.
Although some of the vandalism wasn't reported until Monday, police said all of the incidents occurred between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m. last Friday.
Surveillance video showed "numerous people" walking near the spots when the vandalism occurred.
People who may have witnessed the suspect in action may contact the Binghamton police detective division at (607) 772-7080.
A resident of the West Side home where the flags were vandalized told WNBF News that "it is a sad day for America and in our town to see people who have no respect for each other."
The woman said Israeli flags she had posted near her home last spring had repeatedly been torn down. She said that kind of behavior should not occur in this community or this country.
