Binghamton Police Searching for Evidence in East Side Killing

Detectives enlisted K-9 units as they continued to look for clues in connection with a deadly shooting in Binghamton. Investigators Tuesday returned to the scene of the confrontation that happened just east of the Walgreens Pharmacy. 29-year-old Tyshawn J. Hickman of Binghamton was shot in the head and chest around 5:45 a.m. Hickman and a 35-year-old man were found by police officers on the ground behind a building at 4 Montgomery Street. Hickman was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City with life-threatening head injuries. His name has not been made public. Several shell casings were found in the area of the shooting. Police have not said whether a gun has been recovered in the case. Investigators Tuesday were assisted by units from the Cortland city police department and the Cortland Sheriff's Office in conducting an intensive search on and around railroad tracks off Montgomery Street. Detective Captain Matthew Hodnik declined to comment while the search detail was underway.

UHS Healthcare Complex Planned for Former Johnson City Walgreens

Construction is about to get underway on another United Health Services project in Johnson City. A UHS spokesperson said the former Walgreens Pharmacy building at 335 Main Street will be transformed into "a new healthcare destination." The facility will feature walk-in care, an outpatient lab and imaging services. The complex is scheduled to open in the fall of next year. The spokesperson said the site is designed to provide an "alternative to the emergency department for minor illnesses and injuries." The site is located across the street from Wilson Medical Center. The facility will offer "easier access, convenient parking and a more streamlined experience for patients needing lab work, pre-admission testing or imaging."

Binghamton Man Arrested After Shooting Near Church

A Binghamton man has been charged with attempted murder after a report of gunfire near a downtown church. Authorities said police officers were sent to the area of 36 Fayette Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. Thursday after 911 calls of shots fired in the neighborhood. Police were advised that the man who had fired a gun fled the area on a bicycle. Investigators determined the suspect had been involved in an argument with two other men on the sidewalk before shots were fired. Police searching the area found two spent 9mm shell casings near the scene of the dispute across the street from St. Mary of the Assumption Church. There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident. After learning the name of the suspect, police located him near Chenango and Lyon streets on the city's North Side. According to a police news release, 39-year-old Justyn A. Nock of Binghamton has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the gunfire. He also faces two felony weapon possession counts.

How Many Tickets Did NYS Troop C Write During Speed Week?

The 2nd Speed Week of 2026 for New York State law enforcement was August 3rd through the 9th. During this statewide effort, New York State Troop C participated, targeting speeders and aggressive drivers, as well as focusing on New York’s “Move Over” Law and proper seatbelt use throughout the enforcement period. NYS Troop C encompasses the counties of Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Delaware, Cortland, Tompkins, and Otsego. From August 3rd through the 9th, 1,540 tickets were issued for speeding and 11 speeding violations in work zones throughout the Troop C counties. In addition, there were 150 tickets handed out for violations of the Move Over Law and 128 tickets for seatbelt violations; 44 of those were children who were not properly restrained.

Binghamton Police Close Streets, Call In the Bomb Squad

Sections of two downtown Binghamton streets were shut down for hours after a suspicious item was discovered near a construction site. Police officers were sent to Henry Street between Liberty Street and Brandywine Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. A person working on the Circle K travel center project told authorities a "suspicious package" was spotted on the north side of the job site. The item found near a fence reportedly had wires attached to it. One block on the east end of Henry Street was closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. A section of Liberty Street near the construction site also was shut down. A city police K-9 unit searched the area for other suspicious items. Authorities said no other suspicious items or devices were located nearby. The bomb squad technicians inspected the "suspicious package" and determined it was a "non-explosive device."

Binghamton Pair Sentenced To Prison In Broome County Drug Case

August 14, 2026, Paul Battisti, Broome County District Attorney, announced that two Binghamton, New York residents are headed to New York State Prison. Binghamton residents, 24-year-old Martin Kopacz and 23-year-old Jemma Thomas, pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree. The pair were arrested on May 4, 2026. Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force members executed a search warrant and recovered a large quantity of narcotics. They each will be sentenced to three and a half years in New York State Prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. Both defendants forfeited any interest in the monetary currency recovered during the search warrant.

Broken Glass Panels Close Walkway Between Boscov's and Garage

A convenient link between Binghamton's new Water Street parking ramp and Boscov's department store has been closed. At least two large glass panels that cover the walkway have been damaged. The connector linking the parking structure with Boscov's opened 13 months ago. It provides shoppers and store employees with a quick way to enter the second floor of Boscov's. Signs indicating the walkway is "temporarily closed" appeared in Boscov's and in the garage this week. They advise people to use the store's first floor entrances on Court Street and Water Street. The large panels covering the walkway were installed last summer.

New York Pizzeria Fires Up Ovens at New Binghamton Location

An iconic Binghamton pizza shop has a new home and longtime fans are smiling as they check out the new spot. New York Pizzeria was ordered out of the Binghamton Plaza after the city took control of the property last March after an eminent domain process. Fabrizio and Germano Michitti already had chosen a new site for their restaurant. It's near the Walgreens Pharmacy in a retail plaza at 71 Robinson Street. After the Binghamton Plaza eatery closed in late July, the owners along with family members and employees spent several days moving equipment including large pizza ovens to the new location.
