A convenient link between Binghamton's new Water Street parking ramp and Boscov's department store has been closed.

At least two large glass panels that cover the walkway have been damaged.

The connector linking the parking structure with Boscov's opened 13 months ago. It provides shoppers and store employees with a quick way to enter the second floor of Boscov's.

Signs indicating the walkway is "temporarily closed" appeared in Boscov's and in the garage this week. They advise people to use the store's first floor entrances on Court Street and Water Street.

The large panels covering the walkway were installed by employees of a Pennsylvania company - Mesko Glass - last summer.

Boscov's employees said they didn't know why the walkway was out of service. A call to the Binghamton store manager's office Friday was referred to the company's headquarters in Reading.

The Binghamton mayor's office did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the cause of the damaged glass panels and when repairs would be made.

No separate walkway was required for the original Water Street parking garage because users could access Boscov's directly from the ramp.

A small section of the $25 million parking facility opened in November 2024. Most of the garage became operational in March of last year.
