Today, August 14, 2026, Paul Battisti, Broome County District Attorney, announced that two Binghamton, New York residents are headed to New York State Prison.

Binghamton residents, 24-year-old Martin Kopacz and 23-year-old Jemma Thomas, pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree following a narcotics search warrant executed at their shared apartment in May of 2026.

The pair were arrested on May 4, 2026. Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force members executed a search warrant and recovered  a large quantity of narcotics, including:

  • Cocaine
  • Psilocybin Mushrooms
  • Ketamine
  • Prescription Pills
  •  Marijuana and THC-related products
  • Digital Scales
  • Packaging materials
  • U.S. currency

Both Kopacz and Thomas were charged with multiple counts related to the possession of controlled substances and pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree.

They each will be sentenced to three and a half years in New York State Prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. Both defendants forfeited any interest in the monetary currency recovered during the search warrant.

The large-scale distribution of narcotics like cocaine and other dangerous substances poses a serious threat to the health and safety of our community, and these guilty pleas send a clear message that such conduct will be investigated and not be tolerated in Broome County.
