Yankees Latest MLB Team to Cut Minor League Players

Word is coming out this (Monday) that the New York Yankees are the latest Major League Baseball team to cut members off their minor league rosters.  Several published reports indicate as many as 45 minor league players are being notified that they are being released by the Yankees.

According to Dan Martin writing in the New York Post the New York Yankees are joining a growing number of Big League teams who are making cuts in their farm system. Last week the New York Mets released 39 players.  Most of those released had played last season at the Single-A level.  Names of the Yankees on the cut list have not be announced at this time.

Dan Martin says those players remaining in the Yankees minor league system are expected to continue to receive their $400 weekly check. Cuts are being made throughout the different levels at various Major League levels.  An estimated one thousand or more minor league players are potentially going to out of jobs when the cuts across baseball are finalized.

The recent moves by teams like the Yankees continue to lend a crushing blow to minor league baseball. With no agreement in sight for players and owners at the Major League level the fallout now has landed on minor league teams like the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Should an agreement end up being signed one of the expected parts of that agreement would be the addition of a "taxi squad" similar to the NHL.  Reports of as many as 20 additional players could be continually practicing with their parent teams and activated if injuries or illness take down someone on the regular roster.
