Work Starts at Site of Binghamton University JC Research Center

The sound of construction equipment is being heard as excavation work gets underway for a research and development facility at Binghamton University's Health Science Campus in Johnson City.

The $15 million project for the project at Corliss Avenue and Willow Street was announced five years ago.

Design plans for the research center were reworked after bids for a proposed three-story building came in much higher than expected.

University President Harvey Stenger has said the facility is expected to have about half the amount of space as first planned.

During an interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program last fall, Stenger said the building will be "a modest facility" that will allow the university to "start doing some relationship building with companies" involved with pharmaceutical development.

While some site excavation operations began this week, it's not known how much work might be accomplished before better weather conditions in the spring.

The research center is being constructed between the university's pharmacy school building and the Decker College of Nursing complex.
