The executive director of Catholic Charities of Broome County, Lori Accardi appears on the August 11 edition of the weekly, local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, to talk about the benefits to local charities and the community from the upcoming Jim "Mudcat" Grant Celebrity All Star Golf Tournament.

The annual tournament is taking place this year August 30 at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin and is the work of one of the members of the famous, Black Aces, during the era of segregation and the "Negro League' in baseball, Jim "Mudcat" Grant.

The sports legend returns to the Southern Tier every year for the tournament that has raised thousands of dollars for local charities concerned with the needs of children and families like Catholic Charities, the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse and the Broome County Urban League with a special gift for Binghamton's homeless veterans program.

Accardi also reflects on past visits by Grant and his celebrity sports friends who also stop by pre-schools, hospitals and nursing homes to share inspirational stories and boost moods.

Accardi says people have the opportunity to turn out as spectators for the tournament, make donations to the benefiting charities and sign on to be involved in next year's tournament.
