Investigators say a Vestal man who was shot by a town police officer during an apparent mental health crisis has died.

According to a New York State Police news release issued Thursday morning, 38-year-old Eslam Ahmed Hegazy succumbed to the injuries he sustained

Hegazy was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City after he reportedly was shot four times around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Vestal police had been sent to the man's home at 581 Sequoia Lane about ten minutes earlier to investigate a report of a person who was armed with a knife.

State police investigators said town officers encountered a man with a knife who was threatening to harm himself.

According to the police account, Hegazy ignored commands to drop the knife and threw a television at officers.

Hegazy allegedly "raised the knife and advanced toward an officer." An officer then is said to have fired several gunshots at Hegazy.

No police officers were injured in the incident.
