2024 U-E Grad, Mom Killed in Head-On Crash on Interstate 86
An Endwell woman and her 18-year-old son were killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 86 as they were returning from a college orientation visit.
Authorities said the collision happened shortly before 5 p.m. Friday in the town of Chemung.
According to a state police news release, a westbound Nissan Maxima crossed over the median and struck an eastbound Acura RDX.
The Acura was driven by Colin Ferrell, who had graduated from Union-Endicott High School last month. Ferrell and his mother - 44-year-old Tiffany Ferrell - were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Investigators said the driver of the other vehicle - 36-year-old Steven Mallory of Horseheads - also died.
According to WICZ-TV Fox 40, Union-Endicott school superintendent Nicole Wolfe and high school principal Steven Distefano released a statement advising students and district residents of the crash.
The statement described Colin Ferrell as "a kind and compassionate student who loved playing baseball." It said Tiffany Ferrell was "a dedicated volunteer for the district, involved in many school and community-related endeavors."
The school district will make available counseling services at Union-Endicott High School Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Counseling will be available in person at the school. Phone counseling will be available by calling (607) 757-2181 during those hours.
People needing support also may call 288 at any time.
Friends of the Ferrell family are encouraging area residents to support them by providing meals in the days ahead via the Meal Train website. Information may be found by clicking HERE.
