A husband and wife whose business was forced out of the Binghamton Plaza are feeling right at home after moving from the city's North Side.

That's because Timothy and Philomena Harris now are operating the Leather Corner Shoe Repair shop in the basement of their residence.

The business had been a fixture in the Binghamton Plaza on West State Street since 1972. But after 54 years at the site, they were ordered out after the city of Binghamton took possession of the property.

They closed the shop in late May and spent a couple of weeks relocating all of its equipment and materials to their home on the East Side.

Timothy Harris said the move was a challenge. "One carload at a time, for 12 days," he said. He was grateful for assistance the business received in relocating some of its very heavy equipment from the Binghamton Plaza.

Philomena Harris initially has some concern about trying to work out of their residence. She said she "wasn't really sure it would work." But it does seem to be working well, so far.

The Harrises on Monday said they were happy now that things are in place despite the uncertainty they experienced since Mayor Jared Kraham announced the city's eminent domain case against the Binghamton Plaza's owners in July 2022.

They're pleased that many of their loyal customers continue to rely on them for they type of work they've been performing for the past 54 years.

Leather Corner Shoe Repair is operating at its new location on Bevier Street. The phone number for the business remains (607) 722-1872.
