New York State Police Investigate Trooper Involved Shooting in Marathon

On March 16, 2024, in the early hours of the morning, New York State Police at Homer received a call from Cortland County 911. The report requested a welfare check on a male individual residing on Tim Hill Road in Marathon.

Upon reaching the location, troopers quickly assessed that the 54-year-old man was experiencing a mental health crisis. To make matters more concerning, he was in possession of a firearm.

As the troopers began to engage with the individual, he allegedly pointed the gun in their direction. In response to the immediate threat, a trooper discharged their weapon, injuring the man.

Immediate medical attention was provided to him, and fortunately, no other individuals were reported to have been harmed during the incident. The injured individual was transported by ambulance to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where he is currently in critical but stable condition.

The New York State Police received assistance from the Cortland County Sheriff's Department and Marathon Ambulance.
