Binghamton area police are in line to be better equipped for rapid response.

Binghamton has secured $99,300 in federal funding under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Tactical Team Grant Program for the regional SWAT team.

The money will go to a new rapid response vehicle, fire resistant clothing, tactical vests, hydraulic breaching equipment and night vision headgear as well as additional training.

The Binghamton Police Department coordinates the Metro SWAT Team, which is made up of officers from the Binghamton, Johnson City and Vestal Police Departments.

The legislation accepting the grant award goes to City Council at its next work session and the equipment is expected to be purchased in the next two months.
