Sayre Area School officials say they are aware of the widespread concern about racism and racist symbols but they are currently focusing on trying to get children back to school more than considering new mascots.

A letter from the Board of Directors on the district website says the issue of the Redskins name and mascot is not on the agenda right now but officials are committed to addressing equity and inclusivity.

The letter says “Locally, the Sayre Area School district has received some feedback on our school’s name and mascot: the Redskins.  We know that some in our community have been outspoken on the issue.

The district says it appreciates the conversation and views but right now, the attention is on getting students and staff safely back to school in August.
