Binghamton Recap: A Great Rumble Ponies-Yard Goats Series

Tuesday, July 7 - Rumble Ponies - 10 Yard Goats - 4

Game 1, Binghamton rocked a six-run eighth inning and beat Hartford 10-4 at Dunkin’ Park. The Rumble Ponies struck first from the state capital, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

First baseman JT Schwartz clubbed a two-out two-run home run down the right field line, scoring center fielder Jose Ramos, who walked. It was Schwartz’s ninth homer of the campaign.

Right-hander Channing Austin made his third Double-A start and went hitless and scoreless, but it started rocky. He threw 31 pitches in the first inning and walked two batters, but with two on base and one out, the 24-year-old struck out the final two batters to work out of the jam.

JT Schwartz tallied a four-RBI game and hit his 9th home run, Jose Ramos tallied his 12th multi-hit game, and Kevin Villavicencio picked up his 5th two-hit game.

Wednesday, July 8 - Yard Goats - 13 Rumble Ponies - 4

Binghamton surrendered a season-worst 21 hits and fell to Hartford 13-4 on Wednesday evening.

Left-hander Max Green took the ball for Binghamton, but after a scoreless first inning, Hartford scored six runs and six hits to go in front 6-0 in the second inning. Catcher Cole Messina and right fielder GJ Hill both delivered RBI doubles, as designated hitter Mike Antico followed with a single. Then, with two on base, third baseman Jose Torress clobbered a three-run home run to make it 5-0.

Green pitched 2.2 innings, allowing six runs, with five of those being earned, but he did not walk a batter while striking out one. Binghamton got on the board in the top of the third inning to make it 6-1.

Wyatt Young took the mound for the seventh time this season in the bottom of the eighth inning. Binghamton used six bullpen arms last night, and before that, Young used four on Wednesday night. JT Schwartz had his fourth three-hit game and his 11th multi-hit game. Mets OF Luis Robert Jr. is on a rehab assignment; Vincent Perozo tallied his seventh multi-hit game, Jose Ramos has a team-leading 46 RBIs and is second with 13 HR as of this game.

Thursday, July 9 - Rumble Ponies - 7 Yard Goats - 3

The Rumble Ponies offense came alive behind ten hits and a Rudick three-run home run to take down the Yard Goats, 7-3 on Thursday night.

Yard Goats left-hander Stu Flesland III was flawless to begin, retiring nine straight batters with five strikeouts. He finished 4.0 innings scoreless with six strikeouts and one hit in just his second Double-A start. Hartford took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning behind two hits.

Designated hitter Dyan Jorge walked to lead off the frame, second baseman Roc Riggio singled, which set up catcher Jack O’Dowd, who delivered a sacrifice fly. Right-hander R.J. Gordon continued his masterful July, setting a new season high of 5.2 innings pitched, surrendering three runs with five strikeouts and just two walks.

Jameson settled in and retired seven straight batters, but the damage was done, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings. In the bottom of the ninth, right-hander Saul Garcia made his second appearance of the series and pitched a scoreless frame to seal the win.

Rudick smashed his third home run in his 17 games back with Binghamton; Suero has a team-leading 24 stolen bases, and Ramos holds a team lead of 47 RBIs.

Friday, July 10 - Yard Goats - 7 Rumble Ponies - 2

Binghamton fell to Hartford 7-2 on Friday night, tying the 6-game series at 2-2.

New York Mets outfielder Luis Robert Jr. continued his rehab assignment with the Rumble Ponies. Robert Jr. played the entire game in center field and finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a single, and a hit by pitch.

Robert Jr. crushed a solo home run in the eighth inning off the videoboard in left field, which was the first home run of his rehab assignment. In two games with Binghamton on his rehab assignment, the 28-year-old is 3-for-7 with one home run, two runs, and a hit by pitch.

Right-hander Bryce Conley (1-5) started for Binghamton and took the loss, after allowing six runs over 3.1 innings. In the bottom of the second, designated hitter Jack O’Dowd drew a leadoff walk and right fielder Braylen Wimmer followed with an RBI triple that put Hartford (7-9, 46-38) ahead 1-0. Later in the inning, shortstop Andy Perez hit a two-run single that extended the lead to 3-0.

Schwartz recorded his eighth multi-hit game and has totaled six hits in the series.

Saturday, July 11 - Rumble Ponies - 9 Yard Goats - 2

The Rumble Ponies defeated the Yard Goats, 9-2, Saturday night behind dominant pitching and a seven-run ninth-inning offensive explosion.

Left-handed pitcher Jonathan Santucci was dominant in his start. Santucci recorded eight strikeouts and allowed two runs (one earned run) on four hits and one walk over 6.0 innings. He did not allow a hit until there was one out in the fifth inning, and he struck out six straight hitters at one point.

Santucci recorded his 100^th strikeout of the season when he struck out the side in the fourth inning, and he became the first Mets minor league pitcher to reach that mark this season. Santucci now ranks third in Double-A and leads the Eastern League with 101 strikeouts.

Right-hander Garrett Stratton recorded his first Double-A win and spun two perfect innings, in the seventh and eighth innings out of the bullpen, with two strikeouts. Right-hander Brian Metoyer recorded three strikeouts in the ninth inning. Santucci, Stratton, and Metoyer combined to allow one earned run and one walk with 13 strikeouts.

Stratton has not allowed a run in seven of his first eight Double-A appearances, and he has recorded 12 strikeouts and no walks in 11.2 innings. Lorusso extended his hit streak to six games and his on-base streak to 10 games.

Sunday, July 12 - Rumble Ponies - 10 Yard Goats - 5

Binghamton defeated Hartford 10-5 Sunday afternoon behind standout performances from New York Mets second baseman Marcus Semien and center fielder Luis Robert Jr. on rehab assignments. Binghamton won the 6-game series, 4-2.

Semien (left hip flexor strain) played in his first game on his rehab assignment and went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and played five innings at second base. Robert Jr. (lumbar spine disc herniation) played in his third game with Double-A Binghamton on his rehab assignment, and sixth game overall, and went 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs, and played eight innings in center field.

Binghamton took the lead in the second inning against left-hander Konner Eaton. Left fielder Jose Ramos led off with a single, and later in the frame, right fielder Matt Rudick hit an RBI single that made it 1-0.

Right-hander Justin Armbruester pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts. Right-hander Carlos Guzman pitched a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts.

Robert Jr. combined to go 6-for-13 in three games with Binghamton on his rehab assignment; Lorusso extended his hit streak to seven games and his on-base streak to 11 games; Ramos reached base three times and recorded his ninth multi-hit game; and Suero blasted his 12^th home run of the season and recorded his 13^th multi-hit game.

Time For A Break?

It's MLB All-Star Break week, and that means that Binghamton is off until Friday, July 17th, for a three-game series on Friday, July 17, as the Rumble Ponies return home to Mirabito Stadium to host the Akron RubberDucks, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.
