The Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross says they are assisting four residents who were displaced in a house fire on East Main Street in Endicott.

The blaze at the home located between Mersereau and Vestal Avenues was reported shortly before 2:30 a.m. August 10.

The flames destroyed the first floor of the house but firefighters from several departments on the scene were able to keep the fire from spreading to the second story.

There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross reminds residents it has a program in place to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% over the next several years by installing free smoke detectors in homes that need them and offering instruction on fire prevention and safety, including checking existing smoke alarms and practicing home fire drills.

For information on the program or to schedule an installation appointment, call (607) 785-7207 or email smokealarms.st@redcross.org.

Last weekend, Red Cross Volunteers and the Waverly Fire Department went door to door offering the installation of smoke detectors in homes.
