Some mail reportedly was stolen after someone smashed a window in a U.S. Postal Service vehicle in a Binghamton neighborhood.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday while the mail delivery van was parked on Liberty Street near Munsell Street on the city's North Side.

A letter carrier reported a passenger side window in the vehicle had been punched out and mail apparently was taken.

Representatives of the downtown post office notified city police who sent an officer to the scene to take a report.

No information was available about a possible suspect in the smash-and-grab incident.

Binghamton police detective Captain Cory Minor said although it appeared someone rummaged through the mail in the vehicle, it was not known whether anything was taken.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the federal law enforcement agency responsible for investigating mail theft, was notified of incident. A spokesperson was unable to provide any information about the case.

Minor said he was not aware of any similar recent incidents in Binghamton. The number of cases involving reported mail theft and attacks on letter carriers around the country has been increasing.

Police in Wilkes-Barre investigated a pair of smash-and-grab thefts involving U.S. Postal Service vehicles a few months ago. Mail and packages were stolen in those incidents.
