Illegal Dirt Bikes In Broome County, Enforcement Begins Now

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, the Broome County Sheriff's Office released a notification concerning illegal motorcycle, dirt bike, and e-bike use.

The Sheriff's Office reminds county residents that the education period has ended and zero-tolerance enforcement has begun in Broome County for illegal motorcycle, dirt bike, and e-bike use.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office earlier this year (2026) created a two-phase targeted enforcement initiative, addressing public safety concerns in areas throughout Broome County.

Deputies have been performing several stops on unlawful and underage riders who are first-time offenders, providing educational instruction verbally and through printed materials on the safe and proper use of these vehicles.

Beginning today, Friday, August 28, 2026, deputies have begun zero-tolerance enforcement on underage and/or illegal motorcycle, dirt bike, e-bike, and e-scooter use, which could result in tickets, citations, and possible vehicle or bike seizure, depending on the crime.

Lives are being put at risk, and we are making every effort to address this issue before someone gets hurt, not react after a tragedy has taken place. Dirtbikes are not road vehicles, and they simply don’t belong on the highway or roads in our community. Nor should they be operated unsafely, by riders aged 15 or younger, or without a helmet. Sheriff Akshar also noted that they are not after riders lawfully navigating Broome County streets and roads, rather juveniles treating dirt bikes like cars, joyriding through the streets, putting their lives and the lives of fellow residents.
