An Owego teen is being awarded a scholarship for her volunteer service.

Jessica Jones received a certificate and the $1,500 scholarship from the Firefighters Association of the State of New York.

Jones say she comes from a family with over 300 years of fire department experience and feels she is meant to be a first responder.

Jones joined the Owego Fire Department when she was 16 and was awarded Rookie of the year.

She will be attending Elmira College in the fall.

20 students were chosen for the scholarship on the basis of their volunteer service in the community, good character and the completion of a written essay.
