Several hundred people attended a candlelight vigil in downtown Owego to demonstrate support for firefighters following the death of fire department Captain Matthew Porcari.

The 34-year-old Porcari died of injuries sustained when a floor collapsed in a burning house in the town of Newark Valley.

Owego fire lieutenant Daniel Gavin also was hurt while battling Monday night's blaze on Chamberlain Road. The 28-year-old Gavin was released from a Syracuse hospital Tuesday afternoon.

A half-dozen fire departments were called to help extinguish the fire, which destroyed the house. The residents were outside when firefighters arrived.

Funeral arrangements for Captain Porcari have not been announced.
