In a post on their Facebook page, the Owego Fire Department says that not only are they looking for answers as to who has been destroying the memorial for their fallen brother, but the Owego Police Department is also seeking information on the vandals and believe that there is more than one individual involved.

The Matthew Porcari Memorial Pavilion is located in Marvin Park in Owego and is supposed to be a place where the community can gather and remember the life of one of its first responders.

Instead an individual, or individuals, has desecrated the pavilion, leaving graffiti, breaking light fixtures and trash and causing general destruction. If you know who might be behind the vandalizing of the Matthew Porcari Memorial Pavilion, please reach out to the Owego Police Department at (607) 687-2234.

On January 23, 2013 a space heater started a fire in a shed at a home in Newark Valley. The fire quickly grew, spreading to the house adjacent to the shed. Multiple fire departments were called in to assist in fighting the blaze.

Matthew Porcari was one of the firefighters who responded to the call for help. A volunteer captain of the Owego Fire Department’s Croton Hose Company #3, Porcari entered the house to fight the blaze from within when the floor he was standing on collapsed. Porcari was just 34 years old when he lost his life.
