Residents are being encouraged to check the date on their fire alarms as Fire Prevention Week gets underway.

The Firefighters’ Association of the State of New York says smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years for maximum efficiency.

Officials say statistics show that three out of five home fire deaths in the United States happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms.
