Out-of-Control Jeep Slams into Historic Endicott Church
A sport utility vehicle careened across two lanes of East Main Street in Endicott before smacking into a century-old church building.
Authorities say two people in the Jeep that hit Union Presbyterian Church were injured in the crash, which happened shortly before 7 a.m. Friday.
Witnesses say a woman apparently was driving the westbound SUV which veered across the eastbound lanes of the busy street.
Endicott assistant police chief Craig Williams said four vehicles were involved in the incident. He said two were westbound and two were eastbound.
East Main Street was closed to eastbound traffic for about 45 minutes until the crash scene was cleared.
Stanley Conklin, who chairs the church buildings and grounds committee, said the SUV smashed a window and damaged a planter in front of the church.
Fluids from the vehicle covered portions of what has been used as a youth room. Conklin said a couple of sofas and some other items in the room will be tossed out.
Conklin said a thorough inspection must be conducted but there was no indication of structural damage to the church building.
