A Binghamton firefighter has died and two others were hospitalized following a fast-moving fire that ripped through a building on Main Street.

The blaze erupted in the small one-story structure at 1 Main Street - just west of the Chenango River - Wednesday evening. It was reported around 9:35 p.m.

The first fire and police units on the scene reported smoke and flames coming from the building. The blaze quickly spread to a neighboring building as a second alarm was issued. A third alarm was called a few minutes later.

A major building collapse occurred a short time later and a "mayday" was declared.

One firefighter was killed and two others were injured, according to Mayor Jared Kraham.

In a statement released early Thursday morning, Kraham said the three firefighters were taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

One firefighter was pronounced dead at the hospital. The two others were being treated. They were reported in stable condition.

The names of the firefighters were not immediately released.

In the statement, Kraham said Binghamton fire investigators are being assisted by city police and New York state fire investigators.

Broome County property records show the building at 1 Main Street was acquired by John J. Burns III of Binghamton in September 2013.

The statement by Mayor Kraham in announcing the death of the city firefighter:

“This is an unspeakable tragedy, and our hearts are broken for the firefighter’s family.

I ask us to all say a prayer for the entire Binghamton Fire Department community and  our city.

Every day, our firefighters brave dangerous situations to protect citizens and keep our community safe. The men and women who dedicate their lives to this work are heroes.

Tonight, the City of Binghamton mourns a fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We pray for a speedy recovery for the two injured firefighters and carry the entire  department in our hearts.”
