New York State Police Warn About Utility Phone Scam
New York State Police in the Southern Tier are warning about a telephone scam.
Troopers have recently gotten several complaints from businesses where a caller claiming to be with New York State Electric and Gas threaten to cut utility service unless immediately paid using a prepaid debit card. The scam even provides a call back number with a recorded greeting similar to what you might hear from NYSEG.
Authorities say never trust anyone who calls you and asks you to make a payment using a prepaid card.
If you have any questions about your bill, call NYSEG directly without using the number provided by the caller.
