A building that once housed a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Johnson City is about to become a restaurant.

Moghul Halal Express is expected to open soon at 207 Grand Avenue, a couple of blocks from Wilson Medical Center and the Binghamton University Health Sciences campus.

The new eatery will be owned by members of the family who previously operated the Moghul Indian restaurant at the University Plaza in Vestal.

Renovation work has been underway at the Johnson City building over the past several weeks.

After the VFW post left the site, the property was home to Mai Thai restaurant from 2017 to 2023. The family that had operated that business now has a similar business on Washington Avenue in Endicott.

People passing by the Johnson City building recently noticed activity at the location. On Wednesday, the old "Mai Thai" sign was replaced with a new black-and-gold sign. It advertises "Pakistani & Indian Authentic Cuisine."

The operators of the soon-to-open restaurant expressed excitement about their new venture. While it will have a dining room, it also will offer pickup and delivery options.

A social media post for Moghul Halal Express promises "juicy Seekh Kababs to crispy Samosas and irresistible Desserts."

The restaurant is to operate seven days a week. An opening date has not been finalized but it's expected to start operation in late October or early November.
