Part of a downtown Binghamton building that's been vacant for several years could be back in use by the end of the year.

A delicatessen and juice bar may open in a space that had been occupied by Terra Cotta Catering in the Stephens Square Building at 81 State Street.

Zacaria Jeran is planning to open the business on the first floor of the building located between Court and Hawley streets. He told the city planning commission the deli would operate 24-hours-a-day.

The business would occupy about 4,500-square-feet of space in a building that had been converted into a 102-bedroom student housing complex about five years ago. Terra Cotta closed its event venue at the end of 2018 when its lease ended.

Jeran said the deli with sell various items including "healthy foods." He said he did not plan to sell tobacco or alcohol products at this time.

Jeran told the planning commission customers would visit the business, buy what they wanted and leave. He said people would not be "hanging out" around the place.

A public hearing on the site plan for the proposed business has been scheduled for November 5.

Jeran said he had sold the Northside Deli at 511 Chenango Street in September. He said if he receives the necessary approvals for the downtown deli and juice bar, the place could open in about two months.
