New Business to Open at Site of Binghamton Neighborhood Store
A family-owned convenience store that operated in Binghamton for several decades won't reopen but a new shop will soon be set up in its place.
Cavanaugh's Grocery & Deli on the city's West Side closed at the end of June. A sign at the entrance to the business indicated the place was shut down for a "summer break."
Robert Cavanaugh II, who had been operating the store in recent years, initially indicated the place might reopen at some point. But he ultimately decided to keep the business closed.
The site had been idle for more than four months. Now, work is underway to remove the merchandise and fixtures that remained inside the iconic store, which opened about 75 years ago.
Cavanaugh told WNBF News on Wednesday that a "new store will be moving in" soon. He said it would be similar to the shop his family had operated at the location.
Cavanaugh said some renovation work is planned for the 1,100-square-foot site in preparation for the new business. He declined to identify the people who will operate the store.
Cavanaugh said he expects the new shop will open in January.
