New Business Planned at Former Binghamton Gas Station Site
A downtown Binghamton building that's been idle for several years is being renovated for a new use.
The property at the corner of Washington and Lewis streets had been home to a Sunoco gas station for several decades. In recent years, the place had been used primarily as a car repair shop.
Broome County property records show Hameed Alsaidi and Hizam Alsaidi of Binghamton acquired the site in January for $175,000. The property had been owned for a few years by an entity affiliated with Isaac Anzaroot of Brooklyn.
Workers have been busy at the building clearing out items that remained inside. The exterior has been painted a bright green over the last few days.
The new owners of the property could not be reached for comment but a person familiar with their plans said a deli and vape shop was in the works. Part of the building also is expected to be used to sell halal meat.
In addition to the automotive repair and fueling businesses, the property was the home of Checker Cab Company for a short time.
One of Binghamton's earliest landmarks stood at the site. A 12-room building constructed in 1818 was located there for 118 years.
The structure - which became known as the Dobson Clubhouse - was torn down in 1937.
According to an Associated Press story that year, President Theodore Roosevelt once attended an event at the site.
