Newly-Opened Binghamton West Side Store Closed After Heavy Rain
A Binghamton business that opened its doors less than a month ago has suddenly closed its doors.
The Dollar General store at 68 Main Street on the city's West Side started operations at the site of a former CVS Pharmacy location a few weeks ago.
The new store was suddenly shut down late Tuesday afternoon after a brief period of heavy rain.
A Binghamton fire department crew was sent to the business around 4 p.m. after workers reported water was "pouring from the ceiling" into the store.
Firefighters reported there was a "significant water leak" in the building.
A fire department representative said the problem was linked to the drainage system from the roof of the structure. The fire marshal's office and the city code enforcement office were notified of the issue. Electricity to the building was shut off as a precaution.
The leaking water had affected about half the store's merchandise area.
Dollar General employees who were in the business parking lot shortly after the closing said they "were not at liberty" to discuss the situation.
A handwritten "CLOSED" sign with no explanation was posted in the store entrance. That sign on Wednesday was replaced with a printed sign that announced the store was temporarily closed.
The sign indicated the store would "reopen soon" but offered no additional information.
A worker at another Binghamton Dollar General store said she believed the Main Street site was closed due to an electrical problem but she didn't know when it would reopen.
The building where the new Dollar General is located had been vacant for more than five years.
The property was acquired last January by First Link 16 LLC of Pittsburgh from the Kradjian family for $812,000.
